A Reflection in Culture of the Hard Surfaces Industry – Diverse and Multi-National

Marble Quarry Sardegna, Italy
Marble Quarry Sardegna, Italy

In no other home improvement industry segment are the influences of a true world market more evident than the hard surfaces industry. The hard surfaces industry is truly one of the world’s oldest dating back centuries. Craftsmen and artisans have been developing and utilizing naturally occurring construction materials such as wood, clay, and stone since ancient times. These materials with their natural beauty and durability have stood the test of time and become part of the permanent architectural culture of every civilization. As people have traveled these materials and methods were revealed and traded leading to today’s diverse and multi-national industry culture. While many industries have their origins well defined and owe their development to a single region in the world the hard surfaces industry developed simultaneously in civilizations across every continent leading to today’s modern industry where the choices are as diverse as the world we live in.

Tile & Stone Works is more than just a tile store; we maintain direct relationships and represent manufacturers and brand names from eleven different countries whose products are manufactured with raw materials sourced from five different continents. Some of these companies have grown into large corporations with manufacturing facilities operating in many different countries under multiple brand names while others like quarries, fabricators, wood flooring mills, and small artisans produce their goods without any branding or marketing efforts at all. When is the last time you saw a brand name logo on a granite countertop? Chances are the stone originated in China, Brazil, or India and it was cut and fabricated with machinery and technology developed in Italy by skilled craftsmen here in the USA.
